I am 53 years old and have been a smoker for 6 years. I just recently noticed a deep pain in my throat. It’s not like any sore throat I’ve ever had. It comes and goes and shoots down into my upper chest area a little. My Lymph glands are swollen and my throat is scratchy. I do suffer from sever allergies to all pollens, which causes my Lymph Glands to swell and my throat to be scatchy. However, this is the first time I have felt this deeper pain. It will last for about 5 seconds and then dissipates.
I am concerned about throat cancer or possibly lung cancer. Can this be a symptom of cancer ? I do not have medical insurance at this time and I cannot afford expense hospital bills. I don’t want to jump the gun and worry about cancer, but I also do not want to ignore it. Is there any other possible reasons for the pain. Once I can afford to see a doctor……what type of doctor would you recommend since my funds are limited. National health care would be very helpful right now !!
Dr. Joshua’s Answer:
I cannot say that it isn’t cancer. It’s unlikely to be cancer, but a thorough history and clinical examination will be needed if it persists. Possible causes for the type of pain you describe could include infection, acid reflux disease, coronary heart disease, thyroid disease, to name but a few. And theoretically even cancer. There are numerous possibilities, and I can’t diagnose the cause over the internet, given the limited information I have.
The possibility of coronary artery heart disease must be kept in mind, especially if the pain is squeezing in nature and occurs on physical exertion. Your age, gender and smoking status increase your risk of coronary heart disease. Of course, I recommend that you quit smoking.
Since you have a scratchy throat and swollen lymph nodes, infection a possible cause. If the pain persists, see the doctor. A primary care physician will be able to determine what course of action to take.
Good luck!
